Orchard Place is a nonprofit organization based in Des Moines, Iowa that provides mental health treatment and expertise to children from birth to age 22. With the help of professional staff, volunteers, individual and corporate donors, Orchard Place is able to offer four branches of service to Iowa’s most emotionally troubled and helpless children: a residential treatment program, a federally accredited community mental health center, a juvenile center, and an integrated health program.
The Moonlight Classic is an annual fundraiser to raise money for the Orchard Place’s summer school program as well as the charity’s other programs and services. The event includes a 13-mile evening ride along with contests for best costume, bike, and helmet lighting. In 2018, the Moonlight Classic set a new fundraising record with 600 cyclists, more than 100 volunteers, dozens of corporate sponsors, and over $110,000 raised. To date, the Moonlight Classic has raised more than $600,000 for services targeting Iowa kids.
Sammons Financial Group has been a sponsor of the Moonlight Classic since it started in 2012. In addition, SFG employees annually volunteer to help with the event. Sammons Financial Group was a presenting sponsor of the 2018 Moonlight Classic for donating $30,000 to the fundraiser. Also, the company took home the Moonlight Cup for registering the biggest team, 145 cyclists, for the event. The Moonlight Classic is a remarkable event, and I was thrilled to see so many of my colleagues at SFG come out to support the Orchard Place,” stated Bill McDonough, vice president of investment management and member of the Orchard Place’s board of directors.
