Special Olympics South Dakota

For over five decades, Special Olympics has been providing year-round sports training and athletic competition for a variety of sports similar to those played in the Olympics. Programs are open to children beginning at the age of eight through adulthood. The organization aims to ensure that every single person is accepted and welcomed, regardless of ability or disability. Athletes are encouraged to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy in a supportive community

Special Olympics South Dakota is one of 225 worldwide Special Olympics chapters in 174 countries. The first annual Special Olympics South Dakota Summer Games was held in 1968 with 125 athletes participating, and since then the chapter has continued to grow. Throughout the course of the year, Special Olympics South Dakota offers 19 area competitions and seven state games. Each year, an average of athletes compete in Special Olympics South Dakota events.

Since 2010, Sammons Financial Group has supported Special Olympics South Dakota through monetary donations and employee volunteers. The company has donated a total of $580,000 to Special Olympics South Dakota. In addition, employees spend 300 – 350 hours each year volunteering for the track & field and softball competitions at the Spring Games along with the aquatics program.
